Landfill gas mainly comprises of methane, carbon dioxide and other traces gases which if release into the atmosphere can create odour nuisance. The flaring of landfill gas ensures that practically all of the methane ic converted to carbon dioxide and water. Landfill gas sites can be utilised to generate electricity. The combustion of landfill gas using flares from landfill sites or the utilisation
of an engine to generate electricity is one of the recommended mitigation measures for the management of landfill gas. Dispersion of landfill gas through a chimney stack allows the emissions to be realeased at a high temperature and promotes dispersion of the landfill gas.
